About the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the U.S., with over 29,900 members. Established in 1975, NSBE consists of more than 394 chapters across collegiate, pre-collegiate, and professional levels, both domestically and internationally. The organization’s mission is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
NSBE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit managed by its members, dedicated to supporting the academic and professional achievements of African-American engineering students and professionals. Members benefit from leadership training, professional development, mentoring, and career placement services.
The organization comprises 242 collegiate, 70 professional, and 82 pre-college chapters, organized into six regions. NSBE is led by an executive board of students and professionals and supported by a professional staff at its World Headquarters in Alexandria, VA. The organization has made significant contributions to the success of Black engineering students globally, with chapters and members in Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean. NSBE aims to extend its mission worldwide, fostering a global network of Black engineers, scientists, and technologists.
About the NSBE Charleston Professionals
The NSBE Charleston, SC Professionals Chapter was re-established on May 17, 2011, with a mission to support SSC Atlantic’s initiatives in inspiring interest in STEM careers. Partnering with the Outreach Program, the chapter focused on fostering a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math in the local community. Over the years, the chapter has expanded its reach, growing to include members from several companies throughout the Low Country region.
Since its re-establishment, the NSBE Charleston Professionals Chapter has provided a platform for academic excellence, professional development, and leadership opportunities, while remaining committed to community service and pre-college outreach. Through its various programs, the chapter continues to make a meaningful impact on both its members and the surrounding communities.
